My sister-in-law, Nana, burst into my room one afternoon looking really irate. She just came home from school while I was finishing up a web design for my new site.
âHey! Problem at school?â, I asked her.
âYeah! Major problem!â, she yelled raising her arms dramatically.
âOur school administration blocked Facebookâ, she explained. âHow can they do that?! Facebook connects me to my friends. Itâs where I upload photos, share video and music⌠itâs part of my teenage life!
âCalm down nowâ, I said chuckling. ‘Itâs not the end of the worldâ
âOh, it is for me! , she retorted. âI need that site!â
She eyed me sheepishly. âYouâre the computer geek. How do we get a Facebook unblock at school?â
âWell, since you are my favorite sister-in-law, Iâll tell you howâ, I replied tapping her hand, and straightened up and started my lecture.
We can access blocked websites in two ways:
⢠One is through a free proxy web site. But, the quality of these sites isnât really reliable and they tend to contain spam and often get barred by schools and offices.
⢠The second is by using a PC that has access to the blocked site and operating it via remote control.
Now, here are the tricks to get a Facebook unblock at school or work:
⢠Set up the Facebook Access at School application on your home PC. With this application you can access Facebook or any site from school or work. It functions by searching for non-blocked proxies sites. So when youâre in school, you just inform someone, like your friend perhaps, who has access on Facebook and is using this application and ask him for the URLs of currently non-blocked proxies. Access the URL through your school or workplace browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox ) and search for Facebook.
⢠If no one is available online to assist you with the URLs of currently non-blocked proxies, try to get Facebook unblocked via a proxy website.
⢠While at school, you may also navigate your home PC by using a remote control device. But, for this to work, your home PC should have access to Facebook. Although this technique can be effective, it may not always come handy as there are schools and offices that do not allow the installation of remote control software on their computer system.
Nanaâs face lit up. Beaming, she landed a quick peck on my face and glided to the door. âIâll do it tonightâ, she announced.

Just when I felt that my whole social life was starting to crumble, the tech geek Nikko arrived. âDonât worry guys we can use a Facebook proxy.â
He said in a matter-of-fact voice. We all sighed in relief then Ana went goggle eyed and exclaimed, âOh! A Facebook proxy! Umm⌠What exactly is a Facebook proxy? Come to think of it, what is a proxy?â
WHAT INDEED is a proxy? According to Nikko:
⢠A proxy is a computer system or application program that takes the role of a go-between for client requests about resources from other servers.
⢠A proxy is also used to cache web pages from a web server in order to increase the speed of access to a resource.
⢠A proxy gives someone online privacy by protecting his IP address from the web server he is visiting. In other words, it gives him a little anonymity while browsing through the web. Only a Little anonymity though because the ISP still logs completely all his web browsing activities and the hops taken in between.
⢠Furthermore, a proxy can be used to go around internet filters and firewalls. On a darker note, this could also mean that it is utilized to gain unauthorized access to websites and other networks.
âOkay, so a proxy mainly has the purpose of anonymity and speeding up web browsing. But how does it work?â I asked and Nikko continued to explain:
⢠The client requests a service available from a different serverâmaybe a file, a connection or a web page, by connecting to the proxy server.
⢠The request is evaluated by the proxy server according to its filtering rules, i.e. IP address or protocol.
⢠Then the proxy connects to the relevant server and requests the service in behalf of the client. The proxy server has the option to change the clientâs request or the serverâs response and can even provide the request without contact from the target server (caching).
⢠In a normal HTTP transaction (i.e. requesting a web page), the IP address of the user is transmitted along with the request so that the information can be relayed back to the user. This then is placed in the web serverâs log. In using proxies, the IP address is sent only to the proxy server which then requests the information for him. A correctly configured web proxy will not forward the userâs IP address to the web site he is visiting. However, anonymity is limited to the target server as the proxy will still have a record of his IP address and his web browsing.
âAh, so thatâs why Facebook proxies are so popular. They let you access Facebook anonymously and they can go around filters and firewalls. That is so cool! â, I said excitedly.
âDonât get too excited yetâ, Nikko remarked. âThe choice of what proxy to use is crucial. You should only use a proxy server of which the owner is known and trusted and one that has a clear privacy policy. Otherwise, you would be compromising your privacy for a little Facebook time.â
Nikkoâs final words got me thinking. After finding out what a proxy is and what its uses are and after discovering that no matter how good it seems, there still is a negative aspect to it, should I really risk things and use a Facebook proxy? What do you think?
When we talk of social networking sites, many of us think of Facebook, which of course lives up to its trademark â TheFacebook. With millions of users around the globe, Mark Zuckerbergâs social networking site is indeed TheFacebook, if you get my drift. However, as expected from any idea that hits the pot of gold at the end of that double rainbow (and this is a very rare occurrence), his has also been subjected to a series of ugly and messy legal disputes. These have been perpetrated by his college âchumsâ the most recent of which is Aaron Greenspan. So what exactly are the contentions against the site?
⢠First off, Facebook is a generic term, in Harvard at least. It used to refer to photos of incoming freshmen students of the university. These photos were printed then distributed presumably around the campus.
⢠Second, ConnectU founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra state that Zuckerberg stole the idea from them after he was hired to work on their website. Simply put, they and other people who were involved in the creation of ConnectU particularly Sanjay Mavinkurve, Joe Jackson, and Victor Gao may have a right to ownership of TheFacebook brand due to the idea originating from their own.
⢠Third, as if the claim of the aforementioned individuals was not enough, Greenspan figured into the picture by saying that months before Zuckerberg launched his site, he used the term The Facebook to refer to a component of his online service called houseSYSTEM.
⢠Finally, Zuckerberg seems to be pushing his college friend and website co-founder, Eduardo Saverin out of the ownership portrait due to money fights.
Of course Zuckerberg is appalled by all the shots against him and his million dollar baby and no one blames him for feeling this way. But after reading the above arguments, do you now think that TheFacebook is a trademark infringement? Or is the world just full of envious people who want to cash in on something big?
Facebook impostors are proliferating alarmingly as reported by the media. What started as a social networking website founded five years ago by Mark Zuckerberg, then a Harvard computer science major student, along with his colleagues, to communicate with friends and other contacts, has now become a medium for unscrupulous individuals to hatch their evil schemes.
Just recently, alarming exposĂŠs on scam artists, hackers, identity thieves and other Facebook Impostors posing as friends and stealing personal information from members rocked the global social networking community drawing almost universal criticism of the website.
One report tells of Bryan Rutberg of Seattle, USA, whose account was used to extort money from his friends. Rutbergâs impostor posted âBryan NEEDS HELP URGENTLY!!!â on his status update to which one of his friends responded by sending money to London where Rutberg was allegedly robbed and in need of fare to get back to the U.S.
In another event, Anthony Stancl, a resident of New Berlin, Wisconsin, solicited naked photos of high school boys by posing as a woman on his Facebook account. He purportedly used the photos to compel the young men to engage in sexual acts with him. Stancl was later seized by authorities on grounds of 12 complaints of felony, which included âsexual assault of a child younger than 16 and possession of child pornographyâ.
Even a public official like President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana wasnât spared from this vicious online modus operandi. In his case, an account was set up containing 174 supporters and two photo albums featuring the Berbice Bridge in Guyana and pictures of international leaders, some posing with the South American head. Jagdeo denied any involvement on the existence of the account and sought the assistance of the police to investigate on this matter.
In the light of these disturbing incidents, how do we ward off Facebook impostors?
Jim Lewis, director of the technology and policy program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out two primary ways to keep Facebook impersonation schemes at bay. First is to keep your computer anti-virus programs updated, and second is to inform online companies of your need for a better privacy protection.
Facebookâs management is also doing its part in reducing the occurrences of impersonations. For this purpose, the site offers the following advice to members who want to protect the safety of their online profiles:
⢠Be suspicious of anyone â even friends â who ask for money over the internet. Verify their circumstances independently, either by calling them directly, or checking with mutual friends.
⢠Choose a strong password and use unique credentials for each of your web accounts. Facebook says hackers tap into one site and then try to reuse passwords on others.
⢠Use an up-to-date browser that features an anti-phishing blacklist.
⢠Use and run anti-virus software on your computer.
⢠Reset your Facebook password if you suspect your account has been compromised.
⢠Have more than one contact e-mail address. This will help if one of them is hacked.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB), on the other hand, has also issued guidelines in order to avoid internet fraud on social networking sites, to wit:
⢠Be extremely wary of messages from Facebook friends or strangers that direct the user to another website via a hyperlink.
⢠Before wiring money to a friend in a jam, users should attempt to contact their friend outside of the social networking site, such as over the phone or via e-mail to confirm the situation. If thatâs not possible, BBB recommends asking them a question to which only they would know the answer.
⢠Users should always make sure their computerâs operating systemâs anti-virus and firewall software are up to date.

Why not do some kindof verification that someone is who they say they are? Kindof like an id or somethin? I belong to another website and they use the last four numbers of ones ssn. Just a suggestion.
Oh YES! I have had that experience myself about a week ago.
A CyberCriminal contacted my friends stating that I was robbed in London and desperately needed money for fare back home.
I had a few friends contact me asking if it was true, which of course it wasn’t. I had no way to contact my list of friends on Facebook to warn them that this was happening because the criminal changed my password and I have been unable to get into my account.
However, I sent Twitter tweets, which is integrated with my Facebook, announcing was was happening and not to fall for the scam. My employer used her Facebook account, since we have a lot of the same Facebook friends, to explain the situation and letting them know that it was not me asking for money and to report it to Facebook if they were approached.
How did they get access to my Facebook account? Not sure, but about 2 weeks before that my email address was hacked and over 100,000 emails were sent from my email address. Those criminals were spamming for prescription drugs, male enhancements and the so called Nigeria letters stating someone died and named the recipient as their heir. So supposedly, that is how they got my Facebook access.
I’m still waiting for Facebook to quit dragging their feet in getting my account back under my control so that I can change my password. Seems they are taking their own sweet time about it although they were quick about getting my information from me to prove the account was mine.
My advice? Change your passwords diligently and do NOT use just words or numbers, but a combination of letters (small & caps), numbers and symbols. Believe me, being a victim of hackers is not a fun process at all and not only that it also affects your credibility online.
what about people making accounts that are on you. i have had an account that has been made (im assuming its my ex bf who has been causing me hell for the last 2 years since we broke up) and its using my photo, my name and stating that, quote ‘im easy for good funtimes in bed yes?’. i have sent FOUR complaints to facebook without any result, is there any way of preventing someone making an account on me again? i cant see how it is even possible!! this is a really frustrating issue.
i think people should watch who they add and not post confidential info on their profiles. They should also place non relative pics like cartoons as their avatars.

I have received loads of mail from Nigeria, Ghana and many other countries asking to use my account so they can put millions of dollars there for God knows what reason and promise that i will be able to keep up to 50 % of it, but I dont understand why any one would beleive those mails. You have to be really stupid to give away your bank acount and think you will get millions of dollars just for keepig someones money.
The other thing those people write is that they are looking for investment partners. Think before you act. Why on earth would a serious businessman try to make investment connections by randomly writing a person they know nothing about. It’s sad that the majority of these scams are from Africa but it’s even more sad that people actuallt belive those mails.

My sister was busy reading a novel for her literature class so I had to keep things nice and quiet in our bedroom. That means, (sigh!) no dvd marathons for me tonight. thank you for dropping by my site. like what i said, facebook is a thing to reckon with by other sites. take note of the other social networking sites like multiply and friendster. they are slightly copying some features of facebook. just an observation though.
